The Issue

Surviving a traumatic event is harrowing enough, but being left in limbo, waiting for justice, only exacerbates the trauma. On September 7th, 2024, I was a victim and despite him being on parole, he remains free, walking the streets while authorities await DNA results. It's not just myself—countless others, including innocent children, face this agonizing wait, experiencing unimaginable emotional strain during this time.

In the United States, the backlog of rape kits is a severe issue. As of recent reports, tens of thousands of these kits remain untested, leaving countless victims waiting for justice. This delay is not only a reflection of systemic inefficiencies but also a dire oversight in our legal processes. Studies have shown that swift testing and processing of DNA evidence not only aids in apprehending perpetrators more quickly but also reduces the likelihood of repeat offenses, providing victims with a sense of security and closure.

To address this urgent issue, I call for a comprehensive reform of the laws governing the processing of rape test kits. State governments and law enforcement agencies must prioritize this critical process, ensuring that each kit is tested as swiftly as possible. Establishing dedicated funding, setting strict deadlines for processing, and adopting advanced technological solutions can significantly reduce these delays. Furthermore, increasing transparency and communication with victims about their case status can provide much-needed emotional relief and assurance.

We urge policymakers to recognize the emotional and psychological toll of waiting for justice. By enacting laws that prioritize timely testing of rape kits, they can make a tangible difference in the lives of victims, restore their confidence in the legal system, and ensure that justice is served promptly.

Please sign this petition to advocate for swifter processing of rape test kits. Your support can help bring about crucial change for many victims seeking justice and healing.
