In the last decade, the formally known Washington Redskins had a large controversy because of the organizations name. Many believe that the name and logo of the "redskins" is disrespectful and discriminative towards Native Americans. The name of the team was changed in 2020 to the "Washington Football Team" as they unveiled the new official name "Commanders" in 2023. Many people like the new name while many do not approve and would like to revert to the historic original name. Many Washington fans and NFL fans have come together and want the name to be reverted back.

There has been many petitions made already with over 135,000 signatures to revert the name. The NAGA (Native American Guardians Association) put together this petition to show that the name change to the "Commanders" is actually disrespectful to Native American peoples. The name "Redskins" is deep in cultural and shows bravery and warrior spirit reflecting on Native American culture. The teams name is historical and has a long legacy behind it and many believe that the name change to the "Commanders" is actual disrespectful to Native American culture and should be brought back to its historic name. The NAGA believes that the name change was only made because peoples from non-Native American decent thought the name was offensive when most Natives believe the complete opposite.

I believe that with the growing support from NFL and football fans across the country in support for the name being changed back should be heard and taken into serious account. The name should be chosen by the people. As a NFL fan myself, I loved the original name and I believe that the name made the team unique but I also cannot feel the affects because I am not myself Native American. I believe the NFL should listen to the people and change the name back because of how many people want it to be changed back. This change should be made as soon as possible but will most likely take a lot of time.
