For the 2025–2026 school year, Rickards SGA has selected the following themes: Raiders on the Block, Raiderz in the South, The Raider Experience, and Paint the Sky Blue and Gold (inspired by Rod Wave). This comes after the cancellation of the Rickards homecoming dance last year due to poor theme choices, tying in with poor ticket sales. These themes not only poorly reflect the pride of James S. Rickards High School, but they also poorly reflect what homecoming is supposed to be about. These themes either further shape the negative narrative set around us or come off as extremely vague and blur with the other themes. (This doesn’t even cover the homecoming theme pictures being AI-generated.) These themes are not relevant to most of the student body at Rickards as the only consistent thing throughout the themes is “Blue and Gold” and even for people who are fans of Rod Wave, that’s not a good theme as it ties something that most people don’t relate to. To delve a bit deeper into the theme, Rod Wave’s music is mostly melancholy and talks about heartbreak and depression which does not fit with a high school homecoming theme. The other themes are just a complicated way of saying “Blue and Gold.” While Rickards’ colors are blue and gold, Rickards is much more than just two colors. The petition asks Rickards SGA to listen to the student body and change the homecoming themes so we can have a great homecoming this year!
