The Issue

As a new season ticket holder for our Seattle hockey team and supporter of women's sports, I am passionate about the teams and the communities they represent. Seeing the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) neglect to take inspiration from our vibrant local and native communities in its current branding is concerning.

Seattle has a rich history and culture, much of which is interwoven with the heritage of our local tribal nations (namely the Duwamish tribe who continue to fight for federal recognition.) This should be celebrated and served justice through authentic representation. A team that doesn't honor these critical aspects misses an opportunity to resonate on a deeper cultural and community level. It's not just a logo. It represents who we are as a community.

We have witnessed the potent influence of sports teams in fostering community identities and how their names and logos can have powerful impacts. It's not just about changing a name or image—it's a chance to create a symbol that unites us, embraces our environment, and honors the history of our community.

We urge the leadership of PWHL Seattle to reconsider the current team name and/or logo, shaping them to reflect and celebrate the community. Other organizations have successfully undergone similar transformations. One example being the NWSL team "BOS NATION" transitioning to "Boston Legacy, FC". Listening to fans and changing their logo to achieve branding that resonates deeply with the community's and offers pride.

Our proposal is clear: engage with local communities, the fans, and local artists in a collaborative process to develop alternatives that accurately reflect our community. This process should be transparent, inclusive, and genuinely aimed at honoring the diversity and richness our community offers.

Let's come together and remind the PWHL of their responsibility to us—its fans—and to the broader community. Sign this petition to advocate for a respectful and meaningful change. Let's make sure the identity of our team truly represents who we are.

Please join me in signing this petition to call for a change in the PWHL Seattle team's name and/or logo, ensuring our hockey team stands as a beacon of community pride.

Let's go PWHL Seattle!
