Do you ever wonder what the famous Faneuil Hall building in Boston is named after? Probably not! Peter Faneuil was a wealthy American merchant and slave trader who donated Faneuil Hall to Boston. There are many anti-black symbols inside, starting with the towering statue of Mr. Faneuil in the entrance. The name is symbolic of a horrific history. By keeping this name we are honoring an enslaver. Do we want to honer enslavers or do we want to honor the descendants of those who fought against slavery? Having a statue and building honoring this man is incredibly harmful. Tourists walk by this every day not acknowledging what it signifies. We want to rename it to something less problematic. We propose to call it Freedom Hall. We are open to other ideas! This name represents abolitionists who took action to get their freedom and to get freedom for others. It even dates back to getting our freedom from the British. Remember the city council already voted to change the name of Faneuil Hall.
