A month ago today, this Petition was launched. And today in Tynwald it was stated that public consultation on a new domestic abuse Bill is happening this summer. After fantastic public support we are at almost 2,500 signatures - plus support from numerous people who have been in touch to say they don't use the internet, but would sign if they could. Can we please urge those who have signed, to have your say when the Bill is out for Consultation, let's use this opportunity to have our voices heard, and to shape the law. As mentioned before, we have asked our law makers to consider basing legislation on the new Scottish model, rather than the English. There are 2 reasons why the Scottish legislation appears better: (1) it considers domestic abuse as a "Course of Conduct" - a pattern of behaviour over time including emotional and psychological aspects - not just a physical incident. (2) it puts the voice and experience of the victim at the heart of the law. That's what we want for the Isle of man, and that's the opportunity that the Public Consultation will give to us. DHA have stated that they need to hear the voice and experience of victims. So let us tell them our experience both as victims, as victims' families, as victims' friends or new partners, or just as citizens who care.
