Change the Law to Allow Chickens in South Middleton Township

Change the Law to Allow Chickens in South Middleton Township
The Issue
For my family, raising chickens has been more than just a hobby; it has been an incredible learning experience for my kids. Not only do they enjoy spending time caring for our feathered friends, but the responsibility of nurturing these animals has also been profoundly beneficial for their growth and development. However, the local laws in South Middleton Township make it a challenge for us to continue this cherished activity.
Many of my neighbors in Mt Holly Springs, PA, share this passion and also keep chickens for similar reasons. Having fresh eggs at home, teaching children about responsibility and animal care, and enjoying the companionship of these gentle creatures are just a few of the benefits our community enjoys. But the existing legislation around owning chickens in our township is ambiguous and outdated. This has caused unnecessary stress and legal uncertainty for many local families like mine.
In recent years, urban and suburban communities alike have increasingly recognized the numerous benefits of allowing residents to keep a small flock of chickens. Cities such as Carlisle, and even bigger Pittsburgh and Philadelphia have already updated their ordinances to support this environmentally friendly practice, which promotes sustainable living, reduces food wastage, and brings communities closer together.
We propose a revision of the current laws to clearly define the regulations around keeping domestic chickens, allowing us to lawfully and responsibly raise these animals. By setting feasible guidelines that address health and noise complaints, we can ensure that the practice aligns with community standards while supporting self-sufficiency and environmentally conscious living.
Please join us in urging the South Middleton Township board to reconsider and revise the local ordinances to support families in maintaining backyard chickens. With your support, we can modernize our laws to reflect present-day community values and needs. Sign this petition to help us make a difference in the quality of life for families in South Middleton Township and ensuring future generations can experience the joys and benefits of raising chickens.
