Change the gender field in BambooHR to be inclusive of all gender expressions

The Issue

When a new employee starts work at Change.org, they are added into Bamboo. This is the hub for all things HR – employee info, paid time off, address, and more. But when an employee is asked to self-identify, there are only two gender options. Imagine what it might feel like when you tell a member of staff that they're unable to identify as their true self.

Change.org's HR Team is on a mission. As HR professionals in the social justice space, one of the most consistent questions we get asked is why the gender-field cannot be changed to be more diverse. This doesn’t reflect the inclusive culture we strive to create.

BambooHR has denied our request multiple times to make a more inclusive field. They say they can’t change it because it's linked to the equal employment opportunity reports and these reports / the government doesn’t recognize any other genders besides female/male. Doesn't sound equal to me!

The unwillingness to push for a solution calls into question our shared values and beliefs around gender expression. We, the HR Team at Change.org, have a strong desire to be accomplices in creating a gender field that embodies the spectrum of gender expression, one that is inclusive of non-binary and trans communities.

In 2019, BambooHR served 11,000 clients that were based in 100 countries, and they themselves have 470 employees. Imagine the Change we could make by banding together! With that said, join us in asking BambooHR to catch up with the times and make their gender-field inclusive :)

We are in the process of changing our product to add additional gender options, beyond male and female. This has been on our product roadmap for some time, and it will be finalized by the end of the quarter. We wanted to ensure we did this the right way and have been talking with members of our customer community (including those who identify as LGBTQIA), in addition to seeking feedback through surveys. The U.S. federal government has some reporting requirements - including the EEO1 report and quarterly contribution wage reports - that require our customers (whom we often act on behalf of) to submit gender data about their employees that is currently limited to male and female. We are following government compliance requirements and have taken these into consideration as we update our product. These regulations have limited our gender selections in the past, but we understand the need for more inclusive language around the spectrum of gender diversity. In addition to the male and female options, we’ll provide a nonbinary category that will include a number of subcategories, allowing employees to choose the one with which they most identify. Our customers will have the choice to enable the nonbinary category option as part of their account administration settings.
