Change the Face of our Money

The Issue

Canada's rich and diverse history consists of more than just its ties to the monarchy. Currently, our currency predominantly features the image of the monarch on its face. While this does honor our historical connections, it lacks representation of the many significant Canadian figures who have positively influenced and shaped our country.

Canada has birthed several exceptional individuals - scientists, artists, humanitarians, Indigenous leaders, and more - whose achievements and contributions are a source of national pride. Incorporating their images in lieu of the king's portrait on our currency would serve as an acknowledgement and a tribute to their vital role in shaping Canadian society. It would also foster a sense of Canadian identity that spans beyond our royal associations.

A similar move has been adopted by other countries, including Australia and the United Kingdom, where national heroes are honoured directly on their national currency. This alteration in Australia's design, for example, was met with great enthusiasm and became a symbol of national pride (source: Australian Mint).

We believe this would be a step forward in reflecting the diversity, accomplishments, and national pride of Canada.

We urge the Royal Canadian Mint to consider this proposal for the sake of national representation. Please sign this petition to reevaluate and modernize our representative images on Canadian currency.
