Change the current law to grant a full tuition waiver to 100% disabled veterans

The Issue

100% disabled veterans have given everything for our country, and yet our laws still impose a cap on their educational benefits. It is time to rectify this oversight and ensure that these brave individuals receive the full educational opportunities they deserve. Currently, under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, there are considerable educational benefits for veterans, but these are not comprehensive. The law excludes many necessary costs, leaving veterans with significant financial burdens, despite their sacrifice.

By removing the cap and introducing a full tuition waiver for 100% disabled veterans, we can honor their service and bravery in a meaningful way. The expenses related to education—such as books, extra fees, and sometimes even housing—can be debilitating for veterans who are learning to transition back into civilian life with significant disabilities.

Statistics show that over 4.7 million Americans are disabled veterans. Many of them struggle with the physical and mental scars of war, making their reintegration into society especially challenging. Education is a key component to this reintegration, providing them not just with skills and knowledge but also with renewed purpose and confidence. At the same time, isolation is highly correlated with suicide. If a disabled veteran is encouraged to engage with others around them in an academic environment, it decreases symptomology based on gradual exposure. The reward of earning credits and degrees would reinforce the behavior to continue adding to confidence and purpose, to not act on thoughts of wanting to harm oneself.

Concrete changes are necessary. The government should enact policies that eliminate the current cap on educational benefits for these veterans. This will help alleviate financial strains and open doors for them to pursue degrees, technical certificates, or vocational training without financial hindrance.

Please support this initiative for a greater and more inclusive educational benefit for our 100% disabled veterans. Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to take immediate action to amend the existing laws and grant these heroes the education they deserve.
