A service dog is a task trained dog who works for one handler who has a disability. You cannot get online certification for your service dog. The sites that offer this are scams. It is against the law to state you have a service dog if your dog is not task trained to help you with your disability and you would have a doctor letter in every province in Canada.
There are three provinces that offer testing for certification by the government and if the service dog passes 100% of the test, they receive identification from the province. This is the only certification available in Canada.
Service dog organizations or private service dog trainers may have their own identification, showing that the dog is trained by them.
A service dog is not an emotional support dog or a therapy dog. Neither of these types of dogs have any public access rights in Canada. Therapy dogs work with a handler to help many people in a work setting and only have rights in that one place (hospital, nursing home, etc) while working. an emotional support dog is not a task trained service dog and while it may have some housing rights in some provinces it does not have the public access rights a service dog has and is not specially task trained. It takes approximately 2 years to train a service dog, and sometimes longer, even if trained by its owner.
We want fair air travel rights for all task trained service dogs and handlers. People who struggle with disabilities should be able to travel with their medical device without issue.
