My journey at Portland State University has been an incredible voyage of self-discovery and transformation. I am not a Viking, but I certainly am a Wizard, armed with the power to reshape our reality for the better, and so are you. This isn't just my sentiment; it's shared by many in our diverse and vibrant community, and it's why I'm proposing a change to our beloved mascot from the Vikings to the Wizards.

The present mascot, the Viking, often carries connotations of historical conquest and colonization, which don't fully resonate with the inclusive and empowering values that our university holds dear. Instead, we believe that Wizards are the embodiment of wisdom, creativity, and the indomitable spirit of personal agency. It's important to note that the term 'wizard' often carries gender connotations, but in this case, we intend to redefine it in a way that transcends gender and signifies that we are all powerful magicians, capable of shaping our own realities, regardless of our background or identity.

For us, this choice of the Wizard as our mascot signifies something deeply personal.
