Change New York law to allow open carry of swords in sheaths

The Issue

Living in New York State as a former felon, I know firsthand the restrictions that prevent me from owning and carrying firearms for self-defense. However, our right to bear arms should extend beyond just firearms to include bladed weapons such as swords.

Swords and bladed weapons carry a rich historical significance that predates the age of firearms and still serve as a viable means of self-defense. Just as it's deemed normal and lawful for people to openly carry guns, the same acceptance should apply to carrying swords—provided they are sheathed for safety.

This change would not only uphold an individual's right to self-defense, but it would also recognize the historical and cultural contributions of these weapons. Many martial arts and historical reenactment communities thrive on their historical knowledge and use of swords. Legalizing the open carry of swords, with proper regulations, could foster a deeper appreciation and normalcy, paving the way for education and cultural enrichment.

Statistics show that many regions across the world already allow the carrying of swords under regulated conditions. Countries like Japan, with its deep-rooted samurai culture, permit swords to be carried, acknowledging their cultural value and practicality. Drawing from these international examples, New York can implement a similar framework that respects tradition while ensuring public safety.

In a diverse and historically rich state like New York, altering the legal stance on swords reflects an understanding of varied cultural backgrounds and the evolving views on personal arms. Citizens deserve the opportunity to carry swords responsibly, which would support those who, like me, cannot opt for firearms due to past legal restraints, yet seek legitimate means of protecting themselves.

I urge the legislature of New York State to review and amend current laws to include provisions for the open carry of swords. By doing so, we can honor historical traditions, provide alternative self-defense options, and promote cultural practices within a legal framework that ensures safety for all. Please sign this petition to support our right to carry swords as a lawful means of self-defense and cultural expression.
