This spring, New Trier High School intends to perform the show ‘Hadestown’. Members of the community feel uncomfortable performing this show, which is focused on poverty and labor exploitation and has many racial implications, in such an affluent and predominantly white area. This portrays not only our theater community but our entire school in a racially and economically insensitive light. But this goes beyond painting our school in a bad way. By allowing New Trier to perform ‘Hadestown’, the theater community feels that we are propagating real racial and economic discrimination, issues already present in our school and receiving little proper care (particularly racial discrimination). If New Trier is truly to uphold its values of equality and representation, we must perform another musical.
