I view our federal government like a ship. On its maiden voyage it understood the need to stop and check-in with the people at every port. Australia was progressive. With that, came wealth. Houses and cars were comparatively expensive, but you had more disposable income so could pay them off. A house was a home. A car was the means to get to work.
Politicians were kept in line by investigative journalism, because we had a healthy competitive media landscape.
Decades later, Sydney still has 4 TV stations, although 3 of them are struggling to remain relevant. The News Corp is an oligarch. Investigative journalism aka 'fake news' is being replaced by sensationalism. While corporate greed, and billionaire influence has chipped away at our government. We are now at the mercy of an international 'allies' committing war and crimes with complete disregard to human rights whilst perpetuating a fog over their economic wealth acquisitions.
Our ship has hit the burg and we are taking on water. We have alliances with war criminals. The ship no longer goes to every port in Australia to check on the Aussie's. Instead it goes to overseas ports and pays international clients to buy our resources for free, which apart from payroll tax, we practically get absolutely nothing in return. But as long as the billionaires share portfolio value increases or offer a future job prospect for our politicians, why would they care.
Australian politicians are on average the 6th highest paid in the world. Note that politicians don't produce anything. If a member of parliament dies, the system doesn't collapse. And it's not like they are accountable for the actions. If you are paid based on the quality of your output, or sufficiently so you're not corruptible, I would suggest it's not working.
Our politicians are now manipulated by a particular press company. The baby boomers are all millionaires. My kids can't afford to rent or consider buying a home.
And we have a political party that thinks it's OK to rush through laws, because they want the political win at any cost, dam the consequences and real cost later on, by having a real discussion. This is what happens when you outsource you public servants, the 'private' companies owned by the billionaires, influence the policies for their advantage and not ours.
When the world or future feels uncertain, the billionaires feel the pinch, authoritarianism takes hold in order to maintain their house of cards and sandcastles.
A version of the hate speech laws introduced recently was drafted well before the Bondi incident. And the bigger the bill, the more obvious it is they are trying to hide the true intent in dull boring language of a more sinister motive.
My point is that all the important bills introduced in recent times, only 1 stands out to not have a direct correlation to assist the super wealthy elites, and that was the environment bill. Even then it could have been better.
If politicians are held to account for their actions, they would think twice about submitting a dodgy bill to the floor. That's why I believe the NACC should hold public hearings. I would even accept that all hearings must be recorded, with the footage released immediately after the outcome.
How can we hold anyone to account, if we don't know the circumstances, especially when the NACC is part of the system, we believe should be accountable?
