Many explorers, travel writers, photographers, and artists have been inspired by the glacial beauty of the Arctic over the years. Whether it is the vast ice sheets that cover much of the region’s landscape, the amazing array of wildlife to be found there or the stunning Northern Lights that illuminate its skies, the mysterious sights of this area have never failed to enthrall all those who witness them. Sadly, however, many parts of the region are under serious threat of disappearing forever, thanks to the human-created phenomenon of climate change.

Some people say that climate change is a serious problem that we need to face as rapidly as possible, but they do nothing because they think that someone, one day, will solve the problem. Others say that we don't need to be worried or to put the Earth's health as an international priority because climate change is far away or it's non-existent , but the truth is that it's happening right now.

It's the fact that is melting ice layers, is destroying animal habitats, is changing weather and ecosystem, is killing reefs and many other creatures. It's the fact that makes me feel ashamed of human being.

Climate change is real, and it’s happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world…and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed.” - Leonardo DiCaprio

The sheer beauty of creatures who have evolved over thousands of years to thrive in their own native ecosystems, reduced to this grotesque and arrebant state is just one example of how climate change has altered the lives of so many species.  There is now currently more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than there has been for the past 800,000 years, and according to NASA, the world has gotten three degrees warmer within the last hundred years. All of this extra heat is melting the glaciers at the astounding rate of 8.8 million acres per year. The fact that our unsustainable consumption patterns are causing climate change is now well established. It is clear that our unbridled exploitation of the planet’s resources is causing irreversible damage. It was recently reported that human-generated greenhouse gas emissions have even managed to cancel the next ice age, scheduled to take place in 50,000 years’ time!

We need to stand up for this wonderful planet and stop climate change. With this petition I ask the Council of the European Union to regulate climate change and protect nature.
