Change City Hall Nighttime Lights to Colors of Ukrainian flag
The Issue
Hello!
Richmond City Hall is equipped with the capability to change the colors of its lights to show solidarity with specific causes. I am hoping to get Richmond City Hall to be readorned in the colors of the Ukrainian flag as it was in March 2022.
Recent reporting by Richmond Times Dispatch and RVA Magazine highlighted the connection with Richmond's Ukrainian community.
This is a symbolic gesture, and it comes at a time when our messages as Americans are important. There are certainly loud voices on a federal level, which would be counterintuitive to this effort;
it is my view that local grassroots voices are more representative to who we are as a country.
Many in Richmond have a number of friends in Ukraine who are currently deployed on the battlefield, and stuck across that country being attacked by Russia, feeling abandoned by the United States after the recent manner of change in our national politics.
I have tried several times over the past few weeks to forward this request to the city. I have been told by a number of city employees I would hear back from the city - if the answer is no, then the answer is no - that's disappointing, but Im the one asking, which means I can't be choosing.
So far despite this - I have not heard back despite what I was told and I am waiting. They can ignore me, but they can't ignore us. Your signature helps me inform city hall about what our city wants, and I hope you will join me to help communicate friendship and solidarity with those in Ukraine, and those displaced in support of their right to self-determination and fight for freedom.
