For the past three years, I have dedicated my life to working with children, witnessing firsthand the joy and innocence they should experience during their formative years. Tragically, many children suffer the harrowing effects of sexual abuse, a trauma they will carry for the rest of their lives. No child deserves this horrendous reality, and it's time we demand change.

Child sexual assault remains one of the most heinous crimes, leaving indelible marks not only on the victims but also on their families and communities. Despite the severity of this crime, existing legislation fails to adequately reflect the lifelong consequences endured by survivors. Current sentences for perpetrators vary significantly, often resulting in unjustly lenient punishments that fail to correspond to the gravity of their offenses.

To address this grave injustice, I urge the government to reform child sexual assault laws, mandating a minimum sentence of 15 years for offenders across all categories of such crimes. This would ensure that justice aligns more closely with the lifetime of pain victims must endure. By implementing this change, we would send a strong message that these abhorrent acts are intolerable and warrant severe consequences. Only in grey areas should there be a reduction in the sentence for a child sex offender. 

The trauma of child sexual abuse extends beyond the incident itself, threading loss and pain through every aspect of a survivor’s life. As a society, it is our responsibility to protect our most vulnerable and ensure a safer future for all children. Join me in demanding these necessary legislative changes to protect our youth.
