The Issue

My friend (A) and I encountered a deeply troubling situation. We befriended a 28-year-old woman (B), who, after a few months of becoming a trusted friend, shifted her attention to my friend (A)'s barely 17-year-old high school son. In our state, the age of consent is 16 years of age, meaning (A) has no legal recourse to protect her teenage son from an adult more than a decade older. This is troubling for us parents, as we are legally responsible for our children's wellbeing until they reach 18, yet powerless in such distressing scenarios.

The current age of consent laws across many states in the US fail to adequately protect minors from exploitation by significantly older individuals. A child at 16 is not equipped to navigate the manipulations that can come from older adults. They are under guardianship for a reason, and their emotional, psychological, and physical safety should be our priority.

By setting a uniform age of consent at 18 across the United States, we can address this dire issue. Additionally, implementing a provision where 14 to 17-year-olds can only consent if the age gap is no more than 5 years will maintain a realistic perspective on young relationships while protecting against potential abuse.

According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), young people aged 16 to 19 are three times more likely than the general population to be victims of sexual violence. This statistic underscores the vulnerability of teenagers and highlights the need for decisive legal protection.

It's critical that we urge our lawmakers to adjust these laws, reflecting the modern understanding of adolescent vulnerability and adult responsibility. Strengthening these laws will enable parents to act in the best interest of their children and provide necessary protection against predatory behavior.

Sign this petition to advocate for changing the age of consent laws to 18 nationwide, with appropriate provisions, to ensure our children's safety and uphold parental authority over their minors' welfare. Your support is invaluable in this fight to safeguard our youth.
