End UIUC's Deadname Usage at Graduation

The Issue

Click the link to send emails to the administration demanding change: EMAIL: STOP DEADNAMING TRANSGENDER STUDENTS!

This year at UIUC's graduation, several transgender students were deadnamed despite providing their preferred names and making contact with the university about their names months prior. Deadnaming is the use of the birth name of the transgender or non-binary individual and often outs the transgender or non-binary individual, which can cause potential physical and emotional harm.

We are creating a petition to gain signatures to ensure that the university creates policies so that this will never happen again. We demand to see action. We want the university to email those with preferred names asking which name they would like broadcasted. We want accountability. This is the bare minimum the university can provide for its transgender and non-binary students. The university needs better mental health resources for its students and needs to create more accessible tools which would allow transgender and non-binary students to change their names on Zoom and their registered university emails.

Thank you for sharing. Your help in this means the world. This protest began with one individual and has now been shared campus-wide and is getting recognition across campus and into the local communities. Be on the lookout for the google doc link to be shared later Saturday evening. If you are able to attend, there will be a protest at Alma at 2 pm on Saturday. If you cannot attend, be sure to sign and share this petition and send emails on Monday. Thank you for standing up for what is right and demanding accountability.

If you have further questions, feel free to reach out to Cyrus Arnieri at arnieri3@illinois.edu.
