I am a UK pensioner living in Greece, and recently, my fuel allowance from the UK government was abruptly stopped. This has been a significant blow to me as I have dutifully paid all my taxes and national insurance throughout my life, and continue to pay UK tax even while residing abroad.

This issue is not unique to me alone. Many other British pensioners living in Greece are experiencing the same predicament. The discontinuation of our fuel allowance is unjust considering that we have contributed significantly to the economy through our taxes and national insurance payments.

In 2019, there were approximately 70,000 British citizens residing in Greece (source: Office for National Statistics), many of whom are retirees like myself who rely on this allowance for their heating needs during winter months. The abrupt cessation of this benefit without any prior notice or justification is not only unfair but also places an undue burden on us during these challenging times.

The Winter Fuel Payment was introduced by the UK government as a universal benefit for all qualifying older people irrespective of income (source: AgeUK). It's disheartening that despite meeting all eligibility criteria except current location, we are being denied what we rightfully deserve.

We call upon the UK government to reconsider this decision and reinstate our fuel allowances immediately. We have spent our lives contributing towards building a prosperous nation; it's only fair that we receive due support when needed most.
