We have taken our issue to Oakwood’s City Council and proposed a solution that the city of Boardman, Ohio adopted for a resident that had a nearly identical situation. You can read about that here: https://www.wfmj.com/story/49998938/home-holiday-decorations-stir-controversy-in-boardman

In that case, the city allowed the resident to get a seasonal, special event permit provided that the resident have an additional liability insurance policy for the area of the display.

We have proposed the same resolution to the Oakwood City Council. We know that so many people cherish our display and were excited seeing its construction this year. We received numerous comments from the many passerby’s, adults and children, and overwhelming support from the community. Though the city has not responded to us directly, their Legal Director has made public comments to the media that the city is unwilling to seek a resolution despite their miscommunication costing us thousands of dollars, along with time and effort. We, however, are not deterred and will continue to advocate for a legally, available special permit for which  any Oakwood resident can apply, and assume additional liability to relieve the city of any.
