Most of the waste that is caused actually happens before the food leaves the farm it is grown in. This happens because of the strict cosmetic standards for fruit and vegetables in supermarkets and other stores that no one asked for. Globally as much as 50% of the food produced is wasted. In Australia alone, up to 44 million tonnes of food is wasted annually before it even leaves the farms. Even know this is very bad for the environment, it’s costing our farmers millions of dollars!
