Celebrate Long Friday with a Global Women's Walkout

The Issue

As a mother and grandmother, I have fought tirelessly to make the world a more equitable place for women. Fifty years ago, on what came to be known as "Long Friday," the women of Iceland walked out of their jobs to demand better rights and equality. That courageous act led to significant changes in gender equality within their country.

Today, we stand at a crossroads, facing many of the same challenges that those women bravely addressed in 1975. Gender inequality persists globally, affecting millions of women. It's time for a global movement to echo the bravery of Icelandic women, a moment to unite and stand up for what is rightfully ours.

On Oct 24th, 2025,  this 50th Anniversary of Iceland's historic walkout, we call upon women and allies worldwide to participate in a coordinated walkout to show unity and demand equality. This act of solidarity would not be just a remembrance of past victories but a powerful statement for our future.

By walking out together, we can highlight the systemic issues still affecting women today, including pay disparity, inadequate representation in leadership positions, and ongoing gender-based discrimination and violence. According to the World Economic Forum, it may take another 135 years to close the global gender gap. We cannot wait that long.

To ensure this walkout makes a significant impact, we propose a global campaign, utilizing social media to spread the message and encourage participation. We can organize local events, ensuring safe and legal participation, and make sure our voices are heard by policymakers worldwide.

Please join us in this crucial initiative. When women come together, we can change the world just like Iceland did 50 years ago. It's time for action. Will you stand with us by signing this petition and taking part in the global walkout?   We Dare,  We will and We Can. Let's make herstory this time.  Visit www.wedarewecanwewill.com
