Petition Delivered

This morning, we delivered the signatures and comments from our online petition to the Cedar Rapids City Council, the city clerk, Mayor Ron Corbett, KCRG-TV9, KGAN CBS 2, KWWL, and The Gazette. The petition signatures (nearly 5,000 were collected over two weeks) took up more than 200 pages. Our accompanying letter is below: ------------------------------------- Good morning, I write today on behalf of the group of concerned citizens that would like to urge you to prohibit the use of fireworks within Cedar Rapids city limits. I am attaching two PDF files. One is a simple list of all signatures the "Prohibit the use of fireworks within Cedar Rapids city limits" online petition received. The second file contains each of the comments the petition received. The petition received nearly 5,000 signatures over the course of just two weeks. Many of our supporters have reached out to the council members receiving this email... but unfortunately very few of those messages were responded to. We consistently received feedback from Mayor Corbett, the city clerk, and from council member Susie Weinacht. Their feedback was thankful and understanding... and highlighted a desire to work together with our community to improve the current law. Council member Gulik also replied to several of our messages, but we were basically told "too bad, so sad... there's not much we can do and there will always be fireworks." Hopefully the signatures in this petition will help you all see the great scope of the mistake the current fireworks ordinance has been.
