Summer is just around the corner and so too is the Parks Master Planning that was substituted for having a meaningful and transparent discussion about choosing a location for and building a Casselberry Skatepark. Consultants from Tindale Oliver in Orlando are in the final stages of being contracted to conduct the study that will form the Parks Master Plan. Part of their work will include community outreach. Surveys and workshops are likely to be used. The need for a strong presence at these meetings as well as throughout the Parks Master Planning process cannot be overstated. We will need big numbers. We need to fill the room! Recent developments on the streets of Casselberry are pointing even more towards the need for a skatepark. Young skaters are being contacted by officers from Casselberry Police Department more often, being told they cannot skate on curbs and sidewalks around businesses in the city. We understand the issue and encourage skaters to keep positive, comply and move on. More recently, a group of skaters were enjoying themselves in Secret Lake Park, simply skating, when they were bullied by an older individual. While the situation could have been handled better by the kids by simply walking away, they shouldn't have to be on the receiving end of harassment at a public park. More than anything, it simply underscores the need for a dedicated skatepark where they too can be part of the community. We need everyone's help to continue keeping the need for a skatepark top of mind for our local elected officials. Our kids deserve a safe place off the streets to enjoy themselves, improve their skills, exercise, and be social with their peers. Please join us by sharing and caring!
