Remove the Statue of Thomas Picton at Cardiff City Hall
The Issue
A statue of Thomas Picton stands in the Marble Hall of Cardiff City Hall. While lauded for his military efforts and the highest ranking officer killed at Waterloo, Picton was a savage and brutal ruler.
Serving as the Governor of Trinidad, Picton oversaw an authoritarian regime. In 1806 he was put on trial for the torture of 14 year old Louisa Caldron. He is accused of the execution of dozens of enslaved people, and himself was a slave owner.
We echo the comments of Lord Mayor Daniel De'Ath in calling for the removal of statue of Thomas Picton in from the "Heroes of Wales" hall at Cardiff City Hall at a time when it is safe to do so. It is not acceptable for Picton to be remembered as a hero of Wales.
