WGN9 Reports on Boeing Settling on Toxic Air Case Hours Before it Goes to Trial

‘He came home and told me he had a ‘smoke event’ and the plane was full of smoke,” Martha Weiland said of an experience her husband, pilot Ron, had in 2016. The cockpit crew ran the plane’s engines only to overwhelm the plane with smoke and fumes. The initial burn in his eyes, nose and throat eventually changed into more serious symptoms in the months that followed, according to allegations in Weiland’s lawsuit against Boeing. “It started with occasional slurring of his words and then progressed to not being able to speak at all, not being able to swallow, and eventually losing the use of his legs,” Martha Weiland recalls. Her husband passed away in 2019.’

‘Then – and now – Boeing says there’s nothing to fear. The company released a statement that said in part: “Cabin air inside Boeing aircraft is safe. Extensive research has been conducted by independent researchers, universities, industry groups, and government agencies on cabin air quality. Results have shown time and again that levels of pollutants on aircraft are generally low and that health and safety standards are being met. Based on this research, the world’s five leading aviation medical societies have rejected a link between cabin air and significant health impacts, and no aviation regulator has determined that additional safety regulations are needed.”

The cabin air inside American Airlines Captain Ron Weiland’s Boeing aircraft was clearly NOT SAFE for him, was it?!!!

As for these Government Agencies, Industry funded Universities & Researchers, Industry Groups and Aviation Medical Societies with your ‘one-size, fits all’ chemical safety-level measurement mentality! What might be safe for one person, is not safe for others.
HOW DO YOU PEOPLE SLEEP AT NIGHT?
Shame on you. Shame on all of you working in or for the aviation industry as well as in Governments who are allowing this practice of poisoning innocent, good people to continue.

Some people can remove the chemicals from their bodies, others cannot.
Some people can remove toxins efficiently, others can remove them for a long time before the toxins start to build up (cumulatively) and they become toxically overloaded. There are also those who are susceptible due to genetic variations where even exposure to low levels of toxic fumes can cause them illness and injury.
People are genetically different - Fact.
It’s not rocket science.

Many other truly independent and honest researchers, doctors and scientists (having no financial incentives or conflict of interests) have been screaming this from the rooftops for years - but the establishment chooses not to listen!

The point is, toxic fumes even at what is considered ‘low level’ or ‘safe’ by Governments, Aircraft Manufacturers, Regulators and Airlines, should not enter any aircraft cabin - period.

There is no real time monitoring equipment onboard aircraft for crew (or anyone else for that matter) to know what levels of toxins they and their passengers are being exposed to anyway. How anyone can state the air onboard aircraft is ‘safe’ is beyond ridiculous.

The bleed-air system requires modification to prevent further harm and deaths as stated by the Senior Coroner for Dorset in 2015:

The Senior Coroner for Dorset ‘retired’ after issuing that Regulation 28 Document.
What happened after is that Assistant Coroner - Dr Simon Fox QC took over for the inquest into Pilot Richard Westgate’s death and stated that exposure to organophosphates was “not a proper issue to be examined by this inquest”.
Well if it wasn’t proper to examine the proven exposure to organophosphates which caused the very obvious and marked deterioration in his health at the inquest into his death, where is it considered ‘proper’?!!!

As for Boeing’s comments in the article above, I’d take them with a pinch of salt because we know exactly what they are about and what they are capable of:
“Boeing’s employees chose the path of profit over candor by concealing material information from the FAA concerning the operation of its 737 Max airplane and engaging in an effort to cover up their deception. This resolution holds Boeing accountable for its employees’ criminal misconduct, addresses the financial impact to Boeing’s airline customers, and hopefully provides some measure of compensation to the crash-victims’ families and beneficiaries.”

When criminal activity or deception occurs in any big corporation, it comes from the top, either directly or indirectly. 

And shame on the FAA for allowing this aircraft manufacturer to self-regulate, while conveniently turning the other cheek and later claiming that they didn’t know what was going on.
It’s their job to know exactly what’s going on.

With regards to toxic cabin air, the CAA and FAA have received thousands (possibly tens of thousands) of air safety reports of fumes and fume events over decades but have chosen to ignore them. They also continue to deny the long-term injuries caused by the toxic fumes with the help of ‘Medical Experts’ who are paid by the Aviation Industry and/or Government in order to keep this issue hidden away.
It’s important to remember that the Aviation Industry and Chemical Industry is far more important than the health of individual airline employees and passengers and that there are people in very powerful positions who have no integrity or compassion for others and who’s motivation in life is purely money and greed.

The recent action by Boeing of settling with Mrs Weiland just before going to trial is nothing new. Injury claims from toxic air onboard aircraft in the past have been settled out of court, usually with so called ‘gagging orders’. This means that the claimant/beneficiary cannot talk about the payment or any details of the case in public. It also means that any documents disclosed to the lawyers from the defendants (Boeing in this particular case) will not be made public.
It’s cheaper for Boeing to settle than to have that very important and no doubt revealing information, going back as far as 1953 in the public domain.
It’s effectively another win for Boeing and for the Aviation Industry.
However, we are pleased that Mrs Weiland has at last been compensated for the death of her husband and has financial security for herself and her family for the future.
We also wish to convey our deepest condolences to Mrs Weiland and her family.
We were unaware of this tragic case until yesterday.
