Every year, students and families across Long Island anticipate the joyous celebration of Christmas. However, the stress and logistical challenges of balancing school commitments with holiday preparations can cause undue strain. Currently, schools on Long Island are open the Tuesday before Christmas, leaving little time for families to prepare for and travel to holiday gatherings.

By canceling school on this day, we afford students and their families the opportunity to engage fully in the holiday season without the added stress of academic obligations. This extra day would allow for essential holiday activities like traveling to see distant relatives, finalizing preparations for family celebrations, and participating in community holiday events.

Considering the educational calendar, one day will not significantly impact the overall academic year, yet it can greatly enhance family cohesion and well-being. In fact, studies show that spending quality time with family during festive periods enhances mental health and strengthens familial bonds.

We urge the school boards across Long Island, including those in Nassau and Suffolk counties, to consider the benefits of granting a day off on the Tuesday before Christmas, aligning with the spirit of the season. Let's make Christmas a more joyous and stress-free time for everyone involved.
