As an engaged and concerned resident of Effingham County, I am appalled at the recent approval of a massive data-center project spanning 1,400 acres of our beloved County. This decision was made without adequate consultation or even the basic courtesy of informing those who call this beautiful part of the world their home—us, the Effingham County residents and constituents. Is this how we believe democracy should work? Decisions made behind closed doors, in secrecy?

Effingham citizens do not need, nor do we want, another colossal construction site that does not serve our community. Our county is already struggling with an overabundance of half-empty warehouses and logistics centers, buildings that loom large and idle over our landscape, contributing little to the vibrancy and wellbeing of our community. This data-center proposal is not a step forward; it is a step sideways, at best, towards more unwanted infrastructure.

Furthermore, our water quality and power supply systems are fragile. Can we really afford to strain them further for the sake of a facility that will likely bring more burden than benefit? Effingham's power bills are already high enough, and our water resources scarce and precious. The introduction of a data-center will further exacerbate these issues, making life harder for all of us.

This is our county, our home, and we deserve to have a say in its future. The proposal not only threatens the local infrastructure and environmental stability, but it also disrespects the very citizens it claims to serve through future economic growth. We should not have to shoulder a mysterious burden—for ambiguous gains—placed upon us without our consent.

We call on the decision-makers to listen to the voices of Effingham County. Revoke the approval, and allow the citizens a proper forum to discuss and decide upon what developments best serve the needs and hopes of our community. We refuse to be sidelined as large corporations decide our county's fate.
