The Issue

Our children are the future. They deserve educational tools that truly support their growth and development, fostering a sense of achievement and confidence. Instead of nurturing young minds, IXL, with its current design, seems to be doing the exact opposite, especially in the realm of math education.

When children engage with IXL, one would expect it to encourage their problem-solving skills and bolster their confidence. However, for many, the experience has been quite the contrary. A few points added for a correct answer, while a staggering loss of ten points for each incorrect attempt, creates a stressful environment rather than a learning one. This scoring system is not merely unfair; it is detrimental to a child’s self-esteem and learning process, causing more harm than good.

The 'Incorrect Answer Overviews' that are meant to provide feedback often lead to more confusion rather than clarification. Children are left feeling inadequate and uncertain of their capabilities. This constant back and forth not only extinguishes a child's enthusiasm for learning but fosters anxiety that can spill over into other areas of their life. A tool that ought to be motivational turns into a source of fear and self-doubt.

Education should inspire wonder and inquiry, not dread and panic. When students stay awake at night, stressed about their abilities because of a tool that's supposed to aid their learning, it becomes clear that a reevaluation is necessary. Imagine a world where children are excited about math rather than terrified by it. Where the support they receive does not penalize mistakes harshly but rather uses them as stepping stones towards growth.

Alternatives exist. Other platforms and methods encourage learning through positive reinforcement and incremental challenges. These alternatives should be explored and integrated into our classrooms to ensure that children are excited to learn and explore without the fear of being harshly judged for mistakes.

By signing this petition, you can help urge educational administrators and decision-makers to reconsider using IXL in its present form and push for changes that truly support our children’s learning and well-being. Let’s make education a place of joy and confidence, not anxiety and uncertainty.
