Disney’s plan is to cancel Splash Mountain due to its ties to Song of the South. As opposed to taking the opportunity to modernize the franchise (and potentially highlighting our evolution of equality/humanity), Disney has opted to replace it with Tiana, from Princess and the Frog.

Princess and the Frog is based on a story from the Grimm Tales. The Grimm Tales have written stories with strong Anti-semetic vibes, with titles such as: “Jew in Brambles” and “The Good Bargain”. In the latter, the individual is portrayed as a “penny pinching swindler”. 

Major publications, such as The New York Times and the Washington Post have highlighted the concerning elements of the Grimm Tales. Whilst the number of problematic elements are plentiful, they include (but are not limited to): child abuse, neglect, and violence. 

As such, Disney’s choice to replace Splash Mountain with this problematic franchise is both hypocritical and deeply concerning.
