I am delighted to report that I have received a letter from The Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities. I am also expecting a response soon from the Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs. In her letter, Minister Qualtrough writes that the Government of Canada "is considering the option of ratifying the Optional Protocol to the Convention". This is happening as Canada's new government is "taking the opportunity to review legislation, programs and policies" as part of its commitment "to working toward the ongoing compliance of the Convention in removing obstacles and creating opportunities for persons with disabilities in Canada and internationally." Minister Qualtrough adds that since she is leading "engagement activities with provinces, territories, municipalities and stakeholders to inform the scope and development of proposed federal accessibility legislation," she welcomes input to this important legislation. Let's all join in this process at first opportunity! Meanwhile, as we await further responses from Ottawa, let's renew and redouble our efforts to grow the petition to the 20,000 mark and beyond. Please spread the word by email, Facebook, Twitter, and any way you can.
