Hi Folks,
Spencer here.
Just a few minutes ago, the Province announced some barriers for couples on PWD will be removed.
Couples in which both people receive PWD will now receive the same support allowance as they would if they were two single people, rather than a reduced amount as is currently the case.
In addition, starting Jan. 1, 2026, the Annual Earnings Exemption (AEE) for couples and two-parent families where only one person has the Persons with Disabilities designation will increase from $19,440 to $23,400.
These are some positive changes.
However, they are not enough to declare a full victory, when the spousal cap still will prevent many people who need support from being able to access it in the first place. The increased earning exemption will help in a very small number of cases, but still leaves a lot to be desired.
I do at least acknowledge this is a step forward - but that's one step where many more are required. So let's take this as a positive, but keep advocating for better.
Have a great week,
Spencer
