Campaign The Iron Claw for The Oscars 2025!
The Issue
In 2023, I watched a movie that tackled toxic vs healthy masculinity, the cycle of abuse, brotherhood, and family tragedy. It had a grounded set of layered performances, a solid original song, powerful directing that harnessed the intensity of the Wrestling ring, and a mature screenplay that tackled several of these mature themes while making Von Erich's struggle identifiable to millions. Former wrestler Kevin Von Erich, on whom this family story was based, praised this film for capturing his family's dynamic and life story, and he cited Zac Efron's performance as himself alongside the portrayal of his father, Fritz Von Erich. In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, "What a movie, what a movie. I couldn't believe they did it. [...] I would've thought it was impossible. First of all, how can you find somebody to play Fritz? [...] And then me too! I'm not an easy guy to be. [...] These [actors and filmmakers] are devoted professionals, you know; they really looked into this and [...] I admire it. It's a real craft." To the disappointment of many online, including commentators on the Academy Awards YouTube channel, it was nominated for zero Oscars.
Due to the releases of The Zone of Interest and Past Lives and a late December release, The Iron Claw was overshadowed despite receiving criticism and audience acclaim. Just because the 2024 cut-off release date was November doesn't mean this story deserves any less Academy attention. According to The Academy Awards, Deadline, and Variety, the rules have been changed to allow movies more time for theatrical release. From January 1st - December 31st, any film released in 2024 is eligible for the 2025 Academy Awards so long as it releases from that deadline. A24 released The Iron Claw in Late December (December 22nd, 2023) and ended its 53-day theatrical run on February 13th, 2024. This fact makes it eligible for the Academy Awards. Please sign below if you are passionate about seeing this powerful story get the respect it deserves.
