Install Wildlife Crossing Safety Measures
The Issue
On July 2, 2015 a beloved family of ducks was run over and killed in the westbound lane of the White Horse Pike at the border of Oaklyn & Collingswood. This section of road has been a dangerous stretch for a long time. Despite the posted speed limit of 30 miles per hour, cars continue to whip through this thoroughfare with little regard to surroundings. In addition to school children on their way to Collingswood high school, ducks, turtles and other wildlife often cross here & are an important part of the ecosystem of Newton Park. As an Oaklyn native, I value the family friendly ideals of Oaklyn and Collingswood communities. By creating awareness to respect the wildlife we share our home with, we preserve the integrity of what makes these parks a valuable asset to these communities.
We propose installing wildlife crossing safety measures in Oaklyn and Collingswood on the White Horse Pike at Newton Park. Examples of safety measures include Wildlife Crossing signs such as the one pictured, or speed cushions which encourage traffic to slow down to 25 miles per hour without harming the vehicle. We hope this will encourage passers-by an opportunity to slow down and notice what makes ours towns so great!
