Ban Traffic on Holmes Road, Kentish Town, to protect school kids at drop-off times
The Issue
There is a dangerous situation occurring daily during school drop off and pick up outside St Patrick's Primary school and the College Francais Bilingue De Londres on Holmes Road, Kentish Town.
Before Covid, this was already a very busy road used as a cut-through by many lorries, making it one of the most polluted in London. Stationary vehicles in traffic jams pump out fumes right outside the school playground.
Since then, in order to maintain social distancing, parents and children are required to line up along the pavement outside the school gates on the main road. This stretch of pavement is barely 1m wide.
Parked cars on the north side of Holmes Road force lorries, cars and vans travelling in opposite directions to weave in and out of the gaps in order for traffic to flow, often with restricted visibility of the parents and children crowding to enter the school. This is made worse by vehicles parked on the pavement by the Police Station encroaching on the pavement.
There have already been a number of close calls where drivers have nearly hit children. It's a matter of time before there is a serious accident.
Holmes Road should be closed to vehicles during school drop off and pick up time.
