Let's Bring Public, Outdoor Paddle Tennis to Cambridge MA. Now!
The Issue
It’s time! We need a safe, outdoor winter sport for Cambridge residents of all ages. We urge the City to invest in Platform Tennis (aka Paddle Tennis), a fun game that can be played throughout the cold months and used for other recreation, such as pickleball, in warm months
Cambridge MA has the opportunity to democratize the sport and create the first municipal (fully public) courts and programs for Platform Tennis (aka Paddle Tennis) in Massachusetts!
What is needed now is for a large number of Cambridge residents to show their support. Thanks! Cora Abel and Liz Marran
Platform Tennis offers many benefits:
- Vigorous exercise in all types of weather: Platform Tennis is played in any temperature, offering outdoor exercise and camaraderie during dark winter months.
- Easy to Learn: Platform Tennis mixes finesse, speed and strategy-- a fun game for all ages and abilities.
- Social activity: With four players per court, Platform Tennis offers the chance to make new friends and be part of league play. Cambridge teams can compete in greater Boston and regional competitions. A hut allows friends and family to watch play, and celebrate together.
- Diversity & Inclusion: Our local tennis pros can organize play and teach the game to residents -- from youth to seniors.
- Small footprint: A Platform Tennis court uses less than 1/3rd the space of a tennis court, and can be built on uneven ground or in poor-drainage areas.
- Low maintenance and low cost: Courts require little attention and can be funded by use fees. The game requires minimal equipment for players.
- Recreational space is not wasted – Platform Tennis can be played year-round, including evenings on lighted courts. In warmer weather, courts can alternately be adapted for Pickleball.
· Support for Cambridge’s recreational priorities to bring more sports opportunities to youth and multi-generational groups, including free lessons and fun social activities for underserved populations.
