Calling on National Highways to Address A52 Traffic Gridlock

The Issue

“25-minute journeys taking 90 minutes – Enough is enough on the A52!”

We are calling on National Highways to urgently review the traffic management arrangements along the A52 in Nottinghamshire and take action to reduce the unacceptable levels of congestion being experienced by local communities.

Residents, commuters, families and businesses are experiencing significant disruption as a result of ongoing roadworks, lane closures and traffic restrictions.

The situation has become increasingly difficult, with journeys that would normally take 25 minutes now taking up to an hour and a half.

The impact on everyday life is considerable:

Families and children: Parents are struggling to get their children to school on time, with pupils regularly arriving late because of traffic delays.

Commuters: People are facing substantial delays getting to work, appointments and other daily commitments.

Local businesses: Businesses are experiencing disruption, with staff, customers and deliveries affected by the congestion.

Local communities: Increased traffic and congestion are having a wider impact on surrounding residential areas and local roads.

While we recognise that essential roadworks and safety measures are necessary, there are growing concerns about lanes remaining closed for extended periods, including occasions when no visible work appears to be taking place.

We believe there needs to be greater scrutiny of the current traffic management arrangements and whether alternative approaches could significantly reduce disruption.

WE ARE ASKING NATIONAL HIGHWAYS TO:

Review current lane closures and remove restrictions when they are no longer necessary, subject to highway safety requirements.
Improve traffic management outside working hours by exploring alternative arrangements when work is not taking place.
Minimise peak-time disruption by reviewing whether works and restrictions can be scheduled differently to reduce congestion during school runs and commuter hours.
Protect local communities and businesses by assessing the wider impact of the roadworks on surrounding roads, schools, residents and businesses.
Improve communication by providing clear information about planned works, closures, expected completion dates and the reasons for ongoing restrictions.
Meet with local councillors and community representatives to discuss residents’ concerns and agree practical measures to reduce congestion.
We fully understand the importance of maintaining and improving our roads. However, residents should not have to endure journeys three times longer than usual, children should not be regularly arriving late at school, and local businesses should not be left struggling with the consequences of avoidable disruption.

We are asking National Highways to listen to the community, review its traffic management arrangements and take meaningful action.
