Subject: Calling for the Immediate and Unconditional Release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and All Political Prisoners in Myanmar, and Calling for an Immediate End to Engagement with Myanmar's Military Dictatorship
We, the undersigned, respectfully call upon national governments, elected representatives, international organizations, and all defenders of democracy and human rights to stand together in support of the people of Myanmar by advocating for the immediate and unconditional release of State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political leaders, elected officials, activists, journalists, and civilians who have been unjustly detained for exercising their democratic rights.
Following the military takeover in Myanmar, numerous democratically elected leaders and political prisoners have been arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced under circumstances that have been widely criticized by the international community. Many have now spent more than five years in detention, separated from their families and denied the freedom that every individual deserves under international human rights principles.
The continued imprisonment of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratic leaders represents not only a profound injustice to those individuals but also a denial of the democratic will of the people of Myanmar. Their prolonged detention undermines the rule of law, fundamental freedoms, and the principles of representative government.
We therefore respectfully urge:
1. The immediate and unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners detained for their peaceful political activities or democratic beliefs.
2. Recognition of the rights of the people of Myanmar to determine their own democratic future through free, fair, and inclusive political processes.
3. Governments around the world to continue diplomatic engagement and coordinated efforts to promote justice, human rights, and the restoration of democratic governance in Myanmar.
4. International organizations, including the United Nations and regional partners, to intensify peaceful diplomatic efforts aimed at securing the release of political prisoners and supporting a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
5. Public officials, civil society organizations, and citizens worldwide to stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar and advocate for respect for human rights, democratic values, and the rule of law.
Democracy flourishes when elected leaders are permitted to serve the people who chose them through free elections. Peace, stability, and national reconciliation can only be achieved through dialogue, respect for human rights, and adherence to democratic principles—not through prolonged detention of political opponents.
We believe that the international community has both a moral responsibility and a shared interest in supporting the people of Myanmar in their pursuit of justice, peace, and democracy.
By signing this petition, we affirm our commitment to human dignity, democratic governance, and the peaceful resolution of political conflict. We respectfully request that all governments and international institutions use every appropriate diplomatic and legal avenue to advocate for the immediate and unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all individuals imprisoned for their peaceful political activities.
Together, let us stand with the people of Myanmar in their enduring pursuit of freedom, justice, peace, and democracy.
