GILAKAS'LA friends, family, community, and beyond! We did it!

What stands out to me from this experience is that the City of Campbell River council was hesitant to support our Nations with these place name changes. 

This hesitation confirms that there are incredibly diverse worldviews in this community and my hope with this petition is for the various worldviews, and the implicit bias that comes with those worldviews, be addressed. 

While I understand some words are triggering, colonization and genocide is our collective history. For both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. We can't have reconciliation before we speak this truth within our community.

Our history, as Indigenous people, began prior to colonization. 

Our history, as non-Indigenous people, will be remembered for what we do today. 

I can not thank you enough for your support, and although we have won, the City of Campbell River needs to remain accountable to their word. So I'm leaving this petition up, and I will continue to write to you about the efforts I see and hear. In the next few days I also want to tell you about my experience in the gukʷdᶻi (big house) last week, which I think you'll greatly appreciate.
