Updates on the suspension of the internship with the EU delegation for Israel.
Good morning,
The EMA staff has replied to our email detailing our intentions for starting this petition. Within their answer, they claimed that in the summer of 2023, the Delegation of the European Union for Israel provided an internship for an EMA graduate of the class of 2023/2024, as it had done “in previous years.” However, in October 2023, the EMA staff informed us that they decided they “would not facilitate an internship with the Delegation, and this decision remains in place.” (As current students, we were not aware that this decision had been made as it was not communicated to us precedently.)
This is partly a success for our petition but still insufficient. The staff did not provide reasons or explanations for this decision. Therefore, we will require further effective communication for this decision to be for matters of safeguarding and representing human rights. Merely to say the internship was suspended for reasons of security will not suffice to bring sufficient justice and awareness to the Palestinian struggle as an institution dedicated to teaching and protecting human rights internationally.
We will inform the EMA staff of our follow-up questions, and will propose an online meeting for all current EMA students to partake in. Please take this opportunity to raise your own questions to the EMA staff directly about its rapport with the Delegation of the European Union for Israel in Tel Aviv.
We will continue to inform you if the invite to hold a meeting between staff and students will occur and when it will be.
Thank you again to everyone who has signed and who supports this cause.
In solidarity,
