The Issue

Kilmar Ábrego García, who is from El Salvador, was living in the US since 2011. His wife, son, and two step-children are US citizens. On March 15, 2025, Ábrego García was sent to prison in El Salvador despite not having been charged with or convicted of any crime. It is a grave injustice and human rights violation to imprison someone in any prison without first proving that they have committed a crime that warrants imprisonment.

The US government says that only the Salvadoran government can decide to release Ábrego García from prison in El Salvador. We therefore call on UN Secretary General António Guterres to do everything in his power to get the Salvadoran government to release Ábrego García and allow him to leave El Salvador if he chooses.
