Texas Governor Greg Abbott is killing migrants along the border. Media reports reveal that his state police and Texas National Guardsmen have been ordered to “push small children and nursing babies back into the Rio Grande.” They’re also installing “traps” of razor wire and buoys with underwater webbing to ensnare and drown asylum seekers. Law enforcement have “been told not to give water to asylum seekers even in extreme heat.”

Internal CBP memos reveal that these obstructions are preventing federal agents — who have a legal responsibility to process and provide aid to asylum seekers — from doing their jobs. That memo was written just days before four migrants, including an infant, drowned trying to cross near Eagle Pass, Texas.

Last week, Border Patrol found the remains of 10 migrants along the border. The month before, the bodies of 70 migrants were recovered. There are also documented cases of the razor traps entangling a pregnant woman who ended up miscarrying her baby, trapping and maiming young children, and breaking migrants’ legs.

These actions violate federal law and international treaties. We call on you to enforce the law and order the removal of the deadly traps and obstructions in the middle of the Rio Grande river channel. We then ask you to turn your focus to the real solution to our challenges at the border that must include new immigration laws that provide a safe, legal, and orderly path for people to come to this country.
