The Issue

The proposal to build the Craigo Glenskinno Solar Park and Battery Energy Storage Facility in Montrose has raised significant concern among local residents and environmentalists. I and many others cherish the pristine beauty of Montrose Basin, feel compelled to highlight the grave risks associated with this development. Montrose Basin is not only a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), but it is also designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Ramsar site of international importance. This unique expanse of natural beauty and wildlife is at stake, and its significance cannot be overstated.

At a broader level, this project exemplifies a worrisome trend identified by the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC). As society strives to embrace green energy solutions, we often move faster than our regulatory frameworks can keep up, particularly in terms of fire safety. The NFCC has signaled a critical systemic issue: the gap between modern infrastructure advancements and outdated fire safety regulations. This means that while the project aims to contribute to renewable energy development, it might create unprecedented safety hazards for Montrose residents.

The current energy yield proposed for the Craigo Glenskinno Solar Park does not seem to warrant the enormous risks it poses to our community and the surrounding environment. The risk of fire hazards, particularly with early-stage fire risk management for such solar and battery storage facilities, could have irreparable consequences for the town of Montrose and its cherished natural sites.

This petition seeks to urge Angus Council to listen to the people it represents by formally objecting to this project. We call on the Council to thoroughly assess and recognize that the project's potential benefits do not outweigh the immense environmental and safety risks. Your voice is vital in safeguarding the heritage and future safety of Montrose for generations to come.

Please sign this petition to urge Angus Council to object to the Craigo Glenskinno Solar Park and Battery Energy Storage Facility and stand up for Montrose's unique natural landscape and the safety of its community.
