Call for Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to Resign

Call for Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to Resign
The issue
To the People of Aotearoa New Zealand
We, the undersigned, call for the indefinite resignation of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon from his position in Parliament. His leadership has repeatedly failed to uphold the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document, and his decisions have caused significant harm to the relationship between Māori and the Crown.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi is the cornerstone of New Zealand’s identity and governance. It represents a partnership between Māori and the Crown, founded on the principles of:
- Partnership (Whakawhanaungatanga): Working together in good faith.
- Protection (Kaitiakitanga): Safeguarding Māori rights, lands, and resources.
- Participation (Mahi Tahi): Ensuring Māori have a voice in decisions that affect them.
Under Prime Minister Luxon’s leadership, these principles have been repeatedly breached. His government continues to allow and pass legislation, regulations, and policies that disregard Māori rights and interests, undermining the spirit of Te Tiriti. This has created division and inequality, eroding trust in our nation’s leadership.
Māori vs. Pākehā Perspectives on Te Tiriti:
- Māori Perspective: For Māori, Te Tiriti is a sacred covenant that guarantees their sovereignty (tino rangatiratanga) and the protection of their lands, culture, and resources. Many Māori view Luxon’s actions as a direct violation of these guarantees, perpetuating historical injustices and systemic inequality.
- Pākehā Perspective: Some Pākehā may view Te Tiriti as a historical agreement with limited relevance to modern governance. However, many Pākehā recognize its importance as a living document that ensures fairness, equity, and unity in New Zealand.
Christopher Luxon’s disregard for Te Tiriti risks alienating not only Māori but also Pākehā who value justice and inclusivity.
We demand that Prime Minister Christopher Luxon indefinitely resign from Parliament. His continued leadership threatens the integrity of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the unity of our nation. We urge all New Zealanders—Māori, Pākehā, and others—to join us in holding our leaders accountable and ensuring that Aotearoa remains a place of fairness, respect, and partnership.
By signing this petition, you are standing up for Te Tiriti o Waitangi and calling for leadership that respects and upholds the rights of all New Zealanders.
