Feeling alienated and unwelcome in your own community is not something any American should experience, especially in a setting meant to discuss and resolve communal issues. Recently, during a public council meeting in Dearborn, Michigan, Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud made remarks directed at a citizen that conveyed such exclusion, suggesting they "are not welcome here" and that "the day you move out of the city will be the day that I launch a parade."

Hammoud was responding to a resident speaking out against a street name change for an Arab-American figure who is well known for making controversial statements. 

This incident resonates deeply with me, echoing moments when the political discourse pointed fingers at certain individuals or groups, labeling them as threats to democracy. Ironically, it's actions like these, where citizens are made to feel marginalized, that truly threaten our democratic values. Democracy thrives on open dialogue and respectful exchanges, not on shutting down voices that might dissent.

The words of a mayor are powerful and carry weight; they can either bring together or divide. When a public official uses their position to intimidate or silence the people they serve, it sends a chilling message to the community and undermines the very foundation of governance they are sworn to uphold.

Dearborn deserves leadership that upholds inclusivity and encourages diverse perspectives. The Mayor's comments were not only disrespectful but also indicative of a leadership style that does not align with the values of respect and freedom of expression we hold dear as a community.

For the betterment of our city and to restore the faith of its residents in fair governance, it is imperative that the Mayor steps down. Their resignation would signal a commitment to fostering a more welcoming and participative environment for all citizens, free from fear of exclusion or retaliation.
