The Issue

For over a century, the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB) has served Deaf and Blind students across the state. Its future must reflect values of equity, dignity, and transparency.

We, the undersigned, urge VSDB and its Board of Visitors (BOV) to adopt the following reforms to ensure meaningful representation and accountable leadership:

Our Core Demands:

  • Inclusive Superintendent Search
    • Create a diverse, transparent search committee with Deaf and Blind alumni, parents, and professionals.
  • Representation in Leadership
    • Include Deaf and Blind advocates in all major decisions, especially those shaping school policies and identity.
  • Mandatory Cultural Training
    • Implement training on VSDB's Deaf and Blind histories and civil rights struggles - required for all staff and BOV members
  • Accessible Communication Standards
    • Develop clear, inclusive guidelines for how VSDB communicate with families and the public
  • Ongoing Public Engagement
    • Hold regular open forums, provide timely updates, and include community voices in decision-making.

  Why This Matters:
Excluding Deaf and Blind voices leads to miscommunication and mistrust. True equity means honoring lived experiences, especially in leadership roles. VSDB’s strength depends on visible, inclusive representation.

  Call to Action:
Sign and share this petition to support a more inclusive, transparent, and accountable VSDB. Together, we can ensure every student sees themselves reflected in those who lead.
