The Issue

We, Arsenal supporters clubs and football fans worldwide, are calling on Arsenal Football Club to reinstate Mark Bonnick, a dedicated and passionate worker who has been unjustly dismissed for expressing his solidarity with Palestine. His dismissal is part of a growing and disturbing pattern where football clubs and employers, under political pressure, have targeted and punished individuals for standing up for fundamental human rights.

Football is more than just a game – it’s a platform for expression, standing up against injustice, and fighting oppression wherever it occurs. Yet, in recent months, we have witnessed an alarming trend within the football industry: a refusal to support employees and players who express solidarity with Palestinians in the face of ongoing atrocities.

Mark’s dismissal follows a broader pattern of repression seen in workplaces across the UK and beyond. From NHS doctors to teachers, and from charity workers to academics, workers are being silenced for expressing their political views, even when those views are grounded in humanitarian principles. This chilling effect is becoming more widespread, and football clubs, which pride themselves on supporting communities and celebrating diversity, should not be complicit in suppressing workers' rights to free expression and political participation.

We stand with Mark and call on Arsenal Football Club to:

1. Reinstate Mark Bonnick immediately and reinstate his role at the club, acknowledging his right to express his views without fear of retaliation.

2. Clarify its stance on political expression: Arsenal must publicly commit to upholding workers’ rights to free speech, even when it concerns Palestine, and ensure that employees and players are not punished for expressing lawful political views.

3. Support workers' rights to solidarity and free expression: We ask that Arsenal and other football clubs across the UK pledge to stand by their staff and players who advocate for justice, equality, and human rights.

This is not just about one person—it’s about ensuring that the football industry respects the fundamental rights of its workers. From the fans in the stands to the workers behind the scenes, we all have a role to play in defending free expression, especially in the face of oppression. We urge Arsenal FC to take a stand to protect Palestine solidarity, not just in words but in action.

Football fans have long been at the forefront of movements for social justice, and we demand that Arsenal join the clubs that defend their workers' rights to speak out on behalf of the oppressed.

Stand with Mark. Stand with Palestine.
