Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australian men aged 15 to 44. On average, seven men die by suicide every day. In 2022 alone, 2,455 men lost their lives — making up 75% of all suicides in the country.

This has to change.

The AFL has shown leadership on mental health through initiatives like Spud’s Game, but recent tragedies in the football community show that more action is needed.

We’re calling for the AFL to introduce a Men’s Mental Health Round — a dedicated week that shines a light on the silent struggles many men face, celebrates the courage to speak up, connects fans and players with real support, and honours those we’ve lost. It would be a powerful step toward breaking the stigma and showing that no one should suffer in silence.

It’s okay to not be okay — and it’s time for the AFL to help lead that message.
